Me

I run philosophically. I read philosophy.
I figure the two must go together somehow.

That's me, putting one foot in front of the other in the final few steps of the 2012 Burton 10. Burton's not far away, but that day every step beyond 8.5 miles was someplace new to me.

History

After running only on special occasions for most of my life I committed to 3 and later 4 times a week when I was 40 years old and over 210 pounds in weight. I came back from the most relaxing week's holiday at Lake Annecy, having indulged heavily in the delightful reddish-brownness of the drink the French call Pelican Brun, and found myself unable to use my legs to get near the summit of a hill without also nearing death. Enough was enough. So after one more Pelican for good luck (I had brought it back from holiday with me!) I put on my old trainers for the first time, and went round the block.

You're only as good as your next run. What's yours going to be?

Type 1 Diabetes

In 1984 I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and I now treat this on a bolus Humalog, basal Levemir regime. Since starting regular running I have reduced my Levemir dose from 120 units/day to 40 units/day. I now weigh under 180 pounds.

Regular running is the best way for insulin-dependent diabetics to increase their insulin sensitivity and thereby better manage their condition:
Running -> Reduction in insulin -> Reduction in carbohydrate intake -> Reduction in surplus calories -> Reduction in body weight.
